Alton Brown, Food TV mastermind
Alton Brown didn't start his career in media with an eye to becoming a TV chef. Instead he spent many years on the opposite end of the camera, working various elements of TV and film production, including steadicam operator for "School Daze," cinematographer for R.E.M.'s
"The One I Love" music video and director for countless commercials. But
after years of watching boring cooking shows on TV, Alton knew a
unique, informative and creative cooking show could be produced.
After attending the New England Culinary Institute to gain culinary knowledge, a year later he shot the pilot for his creative and quirky cooking show, Good Eats. Since joining the ranks of TV chefs, Alton Brown has steadily worked to bring a different flavor to the world of food TV.
In 2004, he became the commentator on the Food Network's rendition of the Japanese hit show, Iron Chef. By 2006, when Feasting on Asphalt premiered, Alton was cemented as a hot commodity among Food Network hosts and chefs. In 2007, Alton hosted of the Next Iron Chef competition show and reprised his motorcycle journey to locate real American foodways with Feasting on Asphalt 2: The River Run. 2008 brought a new angle on the Feasting on series with an exploration of Caribbean cuisine in Feasting on Waves.
Over the years as TV culinary instructor, Alton Brown has received accolades for many of his projects. His inaugural cookbook, "I'm Just Here for the Food" garnered a James Beard Award for best reference cookbook in 2002. Bon Appetite magazine named Alton teacher of the year in 2004. Good Eats received a George Peabody Award, a highly coveted broadcasting award, in 2006 for providing education and entertainment in a way only Alton Brown can present.
Currently, Alton is working to promote sustainability in food and is a spokesman for Alaska Seafood. Alton Brown for Sustainable Alaska Seafood is 5 minute video touting the
virtues of buying Alaska seafood. |
